Press release. Simon Jean-Joseph and the Citroën C2 return to action in Greece

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

After a break of more than a month, it’s back to work for Simon Jean-Joseph and Jack Boyère whose European Rally Championship campaign resumes with this weekend’s Elpa Rally in Greece. The French pair will contest the ninth round of the series with the PH Sport-run Citroën C2 Super 1600.

For the first time since 2002, the penultimate round of the ERC returns to the Halkidiki Peninsula in northern Greece. The other major change this year is the event’s mixed format, with the super- special and opening leg all on asphalt before switching to gravel for the second day. The majority of the action (148km) takes place on gravel, however, while the rally features an otherwise
classic menu of several loops of stages to be contested twice each.

After its busy summer schedule, which took it to a long list of ERC and Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) rounds, PH Sport profited from the break that followed late-August’s Barum Rally to carefully prepare the Citroën C2 Super 1600 that will compete in Greece. Meanwhile, Simon Jean-Joseph used the time to hone his physical fitness. “It will be nice to be back in action again,”
he says. “I’m looking forward to getting back onto the stages and I’m really excited by the events that are coming up, beginning with the Elpa Rally.”

“Thanks to my experience of the Acropolis Rally and of various Greek European Championship rounds, I have a fair amount of experience of Greek-style stages,” the Martinique-based driver observes. “That will doubtlessly come in useful for the Elpa Rally which this year takes place in a region that is pretty much unknown territory for me. Apart from the fact that it’s a mixed-surface
event, I know little about it. As a rule, the asphalt in Greece isn’t that hard-wearing but it offers relatively little grip, although the gravel frequently warrants its reputation as being particularly punishing. Let’s hope it won’t be too rough this weekend.”

“I enjoy both types of surface, so the format isn’t a problem for me,” adds Simon who is currently third in the ERC standings. “In fact, as a driver, I think mixed events are a good idea. That said, it’s not really to our advantage against the four-wheel drive cars. We will do our utmost to be as quick and consistent as possible and try to score as many points as we can. The C2′s
strength and performance will be invaluable in helping us achieve that goal.”

PH Sport boss Bernard Piallat says that the mixed-surface format doesn’t pose his team any particular problems: “The most important thing is to prepare thoroughly beforehand so that we don’t forget anything when we swap the C2 Super 1600 from asphalt to gravel spec, which essentially involves the suspension, brakes, wishbones and subframes, etc. We will also add underbody protection.
The team knows the C2 inside out and the job is reasonably straightforward with this car. We will have 2 hours and 45 minutes to make the changes and that should be amply sufficient. Indeed, the mechanics are quite excited at the prospect; it will make a pleasant change.”

“Simon Jean-Joseph, Jack Boyère and the Citroën C2 Super 1600 have been strong on both asphalt and gravel all season,” points out Citroën Sport’s Customer Competition Manager Yves Matton. “This weekend’s mixed format is another interesting challenge for them and will also give them a fresh chance to show off their skills on both types of surface. They will be able to count on the
speed and reliability of their Citroën to try to score the points they need to be in with a chance of finishing in the final top-three of the ERC when the championship heads to Antibes, France, for the final round of the year.”

Press release. A top performance from Simon Jean-Joseph and the Citroen C2 S1600

Simon Jean-Joseph and Jack Boyere took their BFGoodrich-shod, PH Sport-run Citroen C2 S1600 to 8th place overall on this weekend’s Rally Turkey. They also secured victory in both Group A and the Super 1600 category.

Based in the Istanbul region, this gravel event was the second round of both the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) and the European Rally Championship (ERC).
Although fast, its stages – which were new to the majority of competitors – were challenging and technically demanding, with somefairly rough portions and frequent changes in the amount of available grip.

Simon and Jack set off from this morning’s service park on the seafront in Pendik, not far from the Bosporus Straight, for a programme of 112.04 competitive kilometres divided into eight stages. The Citroen crew knew however that it would be tough to improve on 9th overall against the four-wheel drive machinery ahead of them on the leaderboard, but they were intent on defending their overnight position.

“I really had to concentrate hard on the slippery, 20.85km-long SS12/16 in order to lose as little ground as possible in the many places that called for hard re-acceleration,” explained Simon at the finish. “We were able to push harder on the other stages which were more like what we saw on Saturday.” In the end, Simon and Jack came through the weekend unscathed and profited from the clockwork reliability of their Citroen C2 to claim 8th overall.

“The stages were really magnificent,” concluded Simon. “The only thing is to perhaps drop the idea of running them in both directions. Apart from the places that were either unfavourable to us or else very rough, driving the Citroen C2 S1600 for the first time on the loose was great fun. Its potential and reliability are awesome, although it was always going to be difficult to beat the four-wheel drive cars in normal circumstances. After changing to a set-up more suited to the terrain, it was great to be in a position where I could push as hard as I wanted. We finished 8th, but we score the points equivalent to finishing 7th in the ERC, a result that seemed pretty much impossible before the start.”

Alexis Avril, the Technical Manager of Citroen Sport’s Customer Competition Department, was also very positive about the weekend: “We didn’t have any benchmarks with the C2 S1600 for the specific characteristics of these stages before the start. It was a case of trying to find the ideal compromise between a hard set-up, which would penalise traction, and softer settings that would detract from diving precision. In the end, the solution we found worked well.”

Customer Competition Manager Yves Matton was also pleased with the weekend in Turkey: “After a difficult start, Simon and the PH Sport team recovered well which shows that they operate well together. The stages weren’t ideal for two-wheel drive machinery but Simon and Jack pushed from start to finish and didn’t make the slightest mistake. We knew it wouldn’t be easy but thanks to the Citroen C2 S1600′s strength and qualities we come away with a top-ten finish on gravel which is an excellent performance.”

Press release. A strong run from Simon Jean-Joseph and his Citroen C2

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

Simon Jean-Joseph and Jack Boyere parked up their PH Sport-tended Citroen C2 S1600 in this evening’s parc ferme in Pendik in 9th position overall and on top of both the Group A and Super 1600 leaderboards.

The opening leg of this gravel event, which is the second round of both the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) and the European Rally Championship (ERC), featured a menu of 11 stages totalling 137.81km and was divided into several loops located essentially in the outskirts of Istanbul to the north-east of Pendik.

Annoyed by his mediocre run on Friday’s asphalt super-special which saw him post a lowly 39th quickest time, Simon was eager for action to resume this morning. “I drove terribly yesterday evening,” he admits frankly. “In fact I changed the way I drive so as not to make any mistakes because the stage was lined with high kerbs. As it turned out, however, being over-cautious ended up playing against me. This morning I was really looking forward to tackling the first real stages with my C2 S1600 in order to make amends.”

On his first return to service, the Citroen driver was quick to praise the route. “I had my reserves but I was pleasantly surprised because it was nothing like what Jack and I have come across on occasions in Turkey in the past.” His times, however, left him scratching his head a little… “Given the fact that I’m running fifth on the road, the stages hadn’t been completely swept clean and I had a lot of wheelspin. The set-up also needs changing to adapt it better to the terrain.”

“Along with the PH Sport mechanics, we changed the dampers to try and give Simon some more grip,” explained Alexis Avril, Technical Manager of Citroen Sport’s Customer Competition Department. “For the same reason, we also added extra cuts to the treads of his BFGoodrich tyres compared with this morning’s loop.” These changes had an immediate effect, enabling Simon and his C2 S1600 to battle directly with the pack of four-wheel drive cars as he fought his way back up through the field.

“The car is performing much better thanks to the changes we made to the set-up at service,” observed Simon. “Only the poorly swept portions are still a problem for us. I am pleased with the improvements we have made to the C2 and I have a good feeling with the car.” The Citroen driver posted several top-ten times to complete the day in 9th place overall.

Customer Competition Manager Yves Matton believes the day can be divided into two distinct halves: “After this morning’s difficult start, which was due notably to an inappropriate set-up for the opening loop, Simon Jean-Joseph and the PH Sport team succeeded in turning the tables to reveal the potential of the Citroen C2 Super 1600 on these stages which really favour four-wheel drive machinery. Simon is 9th overall this evening and will try to move further up the leaderboard tomorrow, but it won’t be easy.”

A poor reward for Simon Jean-Joseph and Citroën

A promising rally for the Citroën C2 S1600 of Simon Jean-Joseph and Jack Boyére was cut short by an electrical problem 15 kilometres into SS10.

The second leg of the 31 st Rally 1000 Miglia – which kicked off the 2007 European Championship – consisted of two identical loops of three stages, comprising 150 competitive kilometres.

Simon Jean-Joseph had more or less got to grips with his new Citroën C2 during the opening leg on Friday. He steadily increased his pace to lead the Super 1600 category, having set fastest time on SS3. « We used the following stages to increase our advantage and get past the other registered European Championship competitors » he said. The man from Martinique was held back by a puncture on SS6, but he ended the opening leg with the bit between his teeth. « In the afternoon, we pushed hard to try and get back some of the time lost » he said. « That allowed me to see that all the work we had done together with Alexis Avril (chief engineer for Citroën Sport’s customer division) and the entire PH-Sport team was really paying off. I liked the C2’s set-up and we were able to get into the top 10 a few times (10th on SS7/9 and 9th on SS8), which we certainly hadn’t counted on at the start.»

Having fought back to second place in Super 1600 by the time he took the start this morning, Simon had high hopes for leg two. « We’ve seen that are able to go very quickly in the C2, which definitely gives us front-running potential » he said. Simon was on a mission to attack. With just one spare wheel in the boot in order to make the car even lighter, Simon and Jack left service absolutely determined to catch up their rivals in the Super 1600 category and the European Championship. However, an electrical problem in SS10 scuppered their plans.

« It was really frustrating » said Simon. « The car stopped and we just weren’t able to get it going again, which was a real pity. I’m sure that we had the chance of getting a really good result. A small consolation is the fact that we set some good times yesterday and that I’m developing a really good feeling with the Citroën C2 S1600 now. This rally also marked the start of an excellent collaboration with PH-Sport and everybody else at Citroën. »

Yves Matton, Citroën Sport’s customer competition manager, shared Simon’s frustration. He concluded: « It’s a real shame that all the hard work from Citroën Sport and PH-Sport was ruined by a manufacturing defect in a component from one of our suppliers. Before the problem, Simon and Jack’s performances demonstrated that the C2 is competitive with all the other European Championship contenders. This is very encouraging for the rest of the season, where we will have to be both fast and reliable. »

Giandomenico Basso wins the 31 1000 Miglia Rally

Montichiari (Brescia), 21 April 2007 – Giandomenico Basso, the 2006 European Rally Champion, has written for the third time his name into the precious roll of honour of 1000 Miglia Rally which is the third round of the Italian Championship.

From Thursday evening, with the beginning into Castrezzato Circuit, till today, he has always been into the podium position. “Basso the Great” (8 Special Stages won over 15), co-drivered by Mitia Dotta, has begun to go faster and faster from the beginning till the end, and he hasn’t given Luca Rossetti (Peugeot 207 S2000) the possibility to reach him during the competition. In fact, in all the 2 legs, Rossetti has tried to get near Basso, and he has also tried to improve his feeling with this factory car.

Third is Paolo Andreucci (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX), who has always had to fight against the others like Luca Cantamessa (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX). At the beginning, Andreucci had some different problems, but he has always wanted to improve his driving skills & car knowledge in order to get better results. Cantamessa is fourth overall, in front Andrea Dallavilla (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX). After him, Piero Longhi and Andrea Aghini (both on Subaru Impreza STi), who have suffered a lot due to the law potency of their car – as they has told.

The top ten is completed with the other three Lancer Evo IX, driven by Sandro Sottile, Andrea Perego and Fabio Gianfico. Between 2WD cars, the Martinican Simon Jean Joseph (Citroen C2 S1600) has retired due to electrical problems, and the winner is Ivan Paire (Renault Clio S1600), even if, during the whole day, he had some tyres problems.

The main retirements: Volkan Isik (accident), Perico (transmission), Medici (brakes), Betti (injection). Renato Travaglia, after being stopped at the beginning of the competition, he has restarted from the second leg thanks to “Super Rally” option.

In this first meeting of the new “Italian Trophy GT Rally”, the Finnish Toni Gardemeister won on his Nissan 350Z before Calabrini (Porsche Cayenne) and Patuzzo (Porsche 911 GT3); while “Memorial Nicola Busseni” has given everybody a real fantastic show.

The competition, after 15 long and difficult stages, three days, has finished with the arrival into the beautiful Piazza Santa Maria in Montichiari, and it has been also characterized by the sun, hot and thousand and thousand of rally enthusiasts placed all over the stages.

FINAL CLASSIFICATION: 1. Basso-Dotta (Fiat Grande Punto) in 3.13’25’’4; 2. Rossetti-Chiarcossi (Peugeot 207 S2000) at 37’’9; 3. Andreucci-Andreussi (Mitsubishi Lancer EVO IX) at 1’25’’0; 4. Cantamessa-Capolongo (Mitsubishi Lancer EVO IX) at 1’34’’2; 5. Dallavilla-Rocco (Mitsubishi
Lancer EVO IX) at 1’43’’0.

At the end of leg one of the 31st Rally 1000 Miglia, Simon Jean-Joseph, his co-driver Jack Boyere, and their Citroën C2 S1600 are classified second in the Super 1600 category. At the same time, they are also third amongst the European Championship runners.

The 1000 Miglia Rally – which runs to the north of the Italian town of Brescia – is the first round of the 2007 European Championship. The first leg consisted of a spectator superspecial, which took place last night, followed by two identical loops of four stages today. The rally route ran close to Lake Garda, characterised by mountain roads that were wide with several hairpin bends going uphill, followed by tricky and narrow descents.

Simon Jean-Joseph was satisfied with his morning’s work when he got back to midday service at Montichiari after the first loop of stages. « We drove quite carefully on the superspecial yesterday as there was a lot more to lose than there was to gain » he said. « I only really got to know my Citroën C2 Super 1600 in proper rally conditions on this morning’s stages. On the whole, our progress was good. We didn’t make any mistakes and the car worked well. But the roads were very slippery, which didn’t make it any easier for me to get to know the Citroën C2. »

The PH-Sport team made a few adjustments to the car at midday service, following discussions between Simon Jean-Joseph and Alexis Avril – chief engineer for the customer division of Citroën Sport. « I’m slowly beginning to understand which set-ups suit me best » said Simon. «But I knew it wouldn’t be easy to learn on this rally. Under normal circumstances on these roads it would be dificult to compete with the four-wheel drive cars anyway, and all the more so on this rally as the territory doesn’t really suit us. However it was very encouraging to be the top Super 1600 crew, and also first of the European Championship runners. We mustn’t lose sight of our main objective, so we need to try and hang onto this result to maximise our championship chances. »

The second loop of stages started off badly for the Citroën crew. A puncture six kilometres from the end of SS6 cost Simon and Jack more than a minute. Nonetheless, the 2004 European Champion was determined to fight back. « I had no choice but to up the pace » commented Simon. « Currently, we’re 46 seconds off the European Championship leader and just 15 seconds off the top Super 1600 runner. Everything’s still possible tomorrow. I think the second leg will be a lively one for us ! »

Yves Matton, Citroën Sport’s customer competition manager, drew a positive conclusion : « Simon Jean-Joseph has made an excellent start to the rally. He’s got to grips with the Citroën C2 S1600 quickly, and that allowed him to lead both the Super 1600 category and the European Championship classification. After being delayed by a puncture, he’s in the thick of the chase behind his rivals. Tomorrow, he should be able to take advantage of the 152 kilometres of stages to regain the places he lost and improve his overall position. »
