Fiesta time for Focus as BP-Ford steps up for Argentine tango

FIA World Rally Championship leader BP-Ford journeys to Argentina next week for an event that generates a special ambience unmatched anywhere else during the season. Rally Argentina (3 – 6 May) is south America’s only round in the 16-event series and while the passionate Latin American fans generate a party mood along the route, drivers face probably the most varied roads of the year.

The defending champion makes the long journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the land of the tango with an eight-point lead in the manufacturers’ standings for its Ford Focus RS World Rally Car. Marcus Grönholm and Timo Rautiainen lie second in the drivers’ championship, just a single point from the lead, while team-mates Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen are third.

This sixth round of the 16-rally series never fails to excite. It is surrounded by colour and the atmosphere crackles as an estimated 1.4 million spectators launch a weekend-long fiesta out in the pampas. The scenery is stunning, too, ranging from vast expanses of open plains north of the host town of Villa Carlos Paz to the mountains west of the town where rocky ribbons of road wind through a dramatic moon-like landscape. Add in an opening speed test at Buenos Aires’ iconic River Plate soccer stadium and the recipe is there for a south American sizzler.

Citroën, a challenger for victory in Argentina

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

The sixth round of the 2007 World Rally Championship takes Citroën to Argentina where two C4 WRCs have been entered for Sebastien Loeb/Daniel Elena and Dani Sordo/ Marc Marti.

Organised one month after the Rally de Portugal, Rally Argentina is another legendary event which is often quoted by the drivers as one of their favourites because of the outstanding welcome they are given, the mouth-watering smell of barbecued asados and the unique atmosphere of towns like Villa Carlos Paz, Mina Clavero and Santa Rosa de Calamuchita. All these ingredients and more give a distinctively festive feel to the trip to South America.

In addition to the country’s charms, the event itself is described by many as the “the most complete challenge of the year”. Indeed, it features a bit of everything, from high-speed jumps to slower, technically-demanding portions and some spectacular fast sections. The local speciality is the number of water-splashes that crews have to cross; an exercise that can be particularly complex when autumn rain falls in abundance over the Argentine sierra.

Intercontinental Rally Challenge, Citroën joins the IRC ranks

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

joseph1000.jpgFollowing requests from its customers, Citroën has become the fourth manufacturer to register for the Intercontinental Rally Championship (IRC), the new international motor sport series organised by SRW Events, an operation recently established by Eurosport with a view to organising, promoting and developing international sports events. The next round of the 2007 IRC calendar is the Rally of Turkey (May 11-13).

“Registering as a manufacturer for the IRC is a big plus for our customers,” says Citroën Sport’s Customer Competition Manager, Yves Matton. “It will allow all Citroën drivers – whether they compete in a C2 Super 1600 or an R2 – to score points at each round of the series and consequently figure in the official standings. They stand to profit, too, from the active communications campaigns run during every event, including the extensive TV coverage scheduled by Eurosport.”

In addition to the prospect of good media coverage, the IRC will also enable Citroën to further showcase its commitment to motor sport in those countries not visited by the World Rally Championship (WRC). “This aspect is particularly important for our subsidiaries and/or importers,” continues Yves Matton. “It will give them a chance to profit from this expansion of Citroën Sport’s Customer Competition programme to organise their own promotions.”

Citroën’s involvement in the IRC will begin with the outing of French pairing Simon Jean-Joseph/Jack Boyére with their C2 Super 1600 on the forthcoming Rally of Turkey (May 11-13). “Another advantage of the series is its calendar,” observes Yves Matton. “Four of the IRC’s eight rounds also count towards the European Rally Championship which Simon hopes to contest in its entirety. All depends now on the response Simon obtains from his different partners who have expressed an interest in this new adventure…”

The 2007 IRC calendar

May 11-13 – Rally Turkey (TR)*
June 22-24 – Ypres Westhoek Rally (B)*

The end of Super1600 era

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

Taking into account the results of 1000 Miglia Rally, one can start to think in the end of the Super1600 class. Simon Jean Joseph, a well know driver driving for a works team struggled to get top times, his times were well ahead of those drivers with Super2000 or Gp N cars.

Before his puncture on stage number 6, C2 S1600 was in 12 position at near one minute and a half of the head of the rally at stage number 5 of 15!.

Farewell S1600! Welcome S2000.
